LANDO NORRIS battled with his own McLaren team before, despite everything, giving Oscar Piastri his first Grand Prix victory.
The 24-year-old Briton defied his team’s orders until two laps remaining to allow Piastri to overtake him on fresher tyres despite holding a lead of almost six seconds.
They told him on team radio: ‘Lando, he can’t catch you. You’ve proven your point and it doesn’t matter.
“The way to win a championship is not done through yourself. You’re going to want an Oscar and you’re going to want the team. “
There are now seven other Grand Prix winners in 2024 and the last time there were so many winners in F1 was in 2012.
Lewis Hamilton overcame a collision with Max Verstappen on the lap to get the 200th podium after taking third place.
Verstappen, who finished fifth behind Charles Leclerc, was furious throughout the race, fighting wheel to wheel with his old enemy Hamilton before slashing the Mercedes man’s tire.
The collision caused the rear of the Red Bull car to fly through the air before leaving the track and is now an investigation after the race.
Norris was made to pay for suffering another poor start as teammate Piastri overtook him to take the lead.
Verstappen opened up and rejoined the track in second place, prompting an investigation and more with his friend Norris.

The duo introduced attacks on their team’s radio, with Norris claiming Verstappen had taken the lead, whilst the Dutchman claimed he had been forced to leave the McLaren.
The stewards investigated and his team pleaded with Verstappen to let Norris pass at the start of lap four.
Livid Verstappen fumed on his team radio and said: “Okay, so you can kick other people off the track?
“You can tell the FIA that this is how we are going to race from now on. I just take other people off the road. “
Hamilton did well to move up from fifth to fourth in the opening corners and challenged Norris for third.
Fans licked their lips as a fight between old enemies Hamilton and Verstappen went wheel to wheel with 25 laps remaining.
The Mercedes man’s tires were worn and Verstappen attempted to overtake him and overtook him at turn two to move clear and allow Hamilton to return to third place.
Verstappen went crazy on the radio and Hamilton lived to fight another day as the old maestro held off the Dutchman early despite everything that came his way on lap 41.
Verstappen was angry again: “It’s impressive to see how we let ourselves be undermined and completely destroyed my career. “
He even noticed that it hit his guide wheel.
Norris ignored calls from his McLaren team for pushing his tires too hard and extended his lead over Piastri by more than 4 seconds on lap 58. He had no goal of letting Piastri pass despite his team’s persistent demands.
Verstappen and Hamilton were back and on lap 63, the two collided after the Dutchman locked up.
Verstappen entered the track with Ferrari’s fifth Charles Leclerc and grumbled into the team radio.
But Red Bull responded to its driving force by saying: “I’m going to get into a radio fight. It’s childish on team radio. ” Norris continued to defy his team’s orders, outmaneuvering his teammate.
McLaren told team radio: “You’ve proven your point, Lando. The way to win the championship is with your team and with Oscar, through yourself. “
“This is going to make this very inconvenient, please do it now. ”
There must have been a sigh of relief from the McLaren pit wall when Norris nevertheless let Piastri pass on the main straight.
After the race, Norris showed his elegance by congratulating Piastri on his first F1 victory.
He spoke to the press giving a brief report when questioned.
He said: “The team asked me to do it and I did, so yes, that’s it. “
