KTM representatives have confirmed to MCN that LC8c parallel twin models affected by a camshaft wear issue will be repaired under goodwill, whether still in warranty or not.
“We’re working really hard to support the small number of customers in the UK who are affected by this,” UK Head of Customer Service, Gareth Edmunds told MCN.
“As with all repairs, a full service history of the manufacturer is a requirement, but in this case we who do not have a better service history: we only ask that if it has been done externally, there is evidence and receipts, and we will do this Case case.
The Austrian logo also added that consumers who have already had to pay the maintenance bill will be refunded as long as the proper service history is present.
“The dealer will check for the warning signs and if needs be, they will check the cylinder head, camshaft and finger followers,” KTM’s Vice President of Global Motorcycle Marketing, Federico Valentini further added.
“In terms of maintenance and replacement, all those prices will be covered through KTM, and KTM will also refund the prices of the paintings already made under the goodwill agreement.
The accusations of reliability are related to the upper wear in the lobes of the camshaft predominantly before 2011 790. KTM said that an additional oil screen had been implemented in 2020 for the consistency of the oil source and adjustments were made to the fingers of fingers in 2021.
“The issue affects a small percentage of 790 Dukes and 790 Adventures sold between 2018, 2019, 2020, alongside a small quantity 890 Dukes and 890 Adventures in 2020,” Valentini continued.
“Out of about 55,000 sold over 3 years worldwide, there are about 250 motorcycles with cases shown, i. e. about 0. 5% of the models sold. There are no known issues with other models or with existing iterations of this platform.
“We had a single frame of this presentation in our sustainability tests, of which we have covered thousands of kilometers; This year alone, we’ve done more than 3. 8 million kilometers so far. ”
Valentini added: “The first symptoms of possible disorders were in 2019, long after the production of models, and when we discovered it, we act almost without delay to launch the adjustments. We need to be informed of the lessons, and in the last two Years, we have moved the adjustments on the production of quality and the control of the concessionaire support.
“Although it has been called the subject of camshaft, it is not because the root cause is fingers of the fingers. After the investigations during a few years, we discovered that the width and tolerances in the production of the finger were not wide enough and can simply potentially cause over wear on camshafts.
“In 2020, we implemented a broader finger follower and a DLC coating forward and that solved the problems,” the KTM spokesman.
“In addition, there were some issues with debris from production processes in the oil duct that lubricates the cylinder head, and in very rare instances there could be excessive wear from a lack of oil lubrication. To solve that, we inserted a unit to keep that oil duct clean.”
The anecdotal reports suggest, however, that some models later 790 and 890, since Norden 901 diversity of Husqvarna can be affected.
The Austrian engineering and research firm, Coober GmbH, shared online photographs of 2023 A2023 890 Engine this year, appearing what they say is the upper wear and tear in the camera lobe, one of its main business spaces is laboratory for the Engine development.
According to KTM, the issue is said to develop over a prolonged period and is said to be accompanied by a noticeable decrease in performance, alongside additional noise coming from the engine and the cylinder head, along with starting difficulties. Owners who experience these symptoms are advised to contact their nearest KTM dealer for support.
When asked about the possibility of a recall, Federico Valentini went on to say: “As the number of machines affected was so small, we could only deal with it on a single case by case basis, especially with the fact that it isn’t a safety issue.
“There are also learning for us because even if it is not a big topic at that time, we could have fainted with communication before to send this message. ”
