Kia Unveils Home and Modular Delivery Trucks Connected to Electric Vehicles at CES 2024

Kia is on the hunt for the future, and it looks like it will be electric and commercial. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the automaker also unveiled its connected home concept for two-way charging of electric cars. such as concept cars and delivery modules. The connected home uses vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability, an 11. 5 kW DC charger called the Wallbox Quasar 2. Kia said it would “happen in the future,” though there’s no timeline, and that’s not surprising, given that virtually all home charging equipment is 240-volt Level 2, not DC. Apart from that, the demo was held to show off the new connected Kia EV9 as it is the first Kia EV capable of supporting V2H capability. The Quasar 2 automatically starts charging the EV9, but in the event of a power failure, it changes direction so that the EV9’s battery is used to power the home.

Kia said that with an EV9 battery capacity ranging from 76.1 to 99.8 kWh, the EV9 could potentially “sustain a typical household’s energy consumption for up to several days.” The Quasar 2 would then switch back to charging the vehicle once the power came back on. It could also “intelligently identify opportunities for the EV9 to supply to the home,” such as during times when electricity rates are high.

Kia’s electrification demonstration also includes the EV6, which offers a vehicle charging (V2L) feature that allows the vehicle to supply up to 1,900 watts to power lights, equipment or certain appliances, similar to the Pro Power Onboard formula available on some Fords. F-150 pickup trucks. The concept electric cars shown are the Concept EV3 compact crossover and the EV4 Concept sedan, the latter air-conditioned with pin-shaped air vents that can replace the setup depending on the desired airflow; and hand-woven fabrics with herbal dyes and recycled cotton.

On the advertising front, Kia introduced its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV), shown above. First, it plans to base its PBV commercial styling on an all-new modular electric vehicle, which it has unveiled as the Concept PV5. The company said the multi-phase plan would also help advance Hyundai Motor Group’s work in robotics, complex air mobility and autonomous driving.

The PBV cars will use the Group’s complex SDx (Software-to-Everything) software. In a first phase, the PV5 would be used as a delivery or advertising vehicle, or as a ride-sharing vehicle, software that would allow cars to talk to each other and with external data, such as delivery or address information. The second phase would add more PVB vehicles with AI-based platforms that could keep cars up-to-date and communicate with users. The third phase would allow for more car customization and integration into long-term mobility ecosystems.

The PBV Diversity is built on a single chassis, with easily interchangeable modules behind the driver. Kia said the PBV could be transformed into a “taxi during the day, a delivery van at night and a personal RV during the weekend. “Vehicles will be shipped as a kit and the seamless frame design can be easily adjusted using moving parts to express lengths.

Kia brought PBV concepts such as the larger PV7, the smaller PV1 and two versions of the PV5. In this first long-term phase, there will be several versions of the PV5, adding a base version, a pickup truck, a raised roof, and a chassis cab. , and beyond that, an autonomous vehicle “robotaxis”. Delivery cars would come with rail systems built into the shipping compartment, allowing parts to be seamlessly loaded, unloaded, or moved between cars.

Kia intends to supply only advertising vehicles, but also a committed commercial formula that would also include software responses and global partnerships. To this end, it is building a specific VB plant in Korea, which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2025 and has an annual capacity of 150,000 units.
