KIA takes third base from Myanmar junta since ‘midnight massacre’

The regime has lost three bases in Kachin and northern Shan State to the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied resistance forces since shelling the village of Mung Lai Hkyet shortly before on October 9, killing at least 29 civilians, as well as children.

The KIA said it seized a strategic junta base near the village of Nam San Yang in Momauk township, about nine kilometers from its headquarters in the city of Laiza, Kachin state, on Friday.

KIA spokesman Colonel Naw Bu told Irrawaddy on Saturday that ethnic armed groups seized Lal Long’s junta base in Momauk on Friday afternoon.

“It is a key outpost in a strategic location, as it is situated near the village of Nam San Yang on the Myitkyina-Bhamo road, which connects to the town of Laiza, Winemaw and the municipalities of Bhamo,” he explained.

The junta responded with an airstrike near the area around 3 a. m. on Saturday, he added.

KIA troops took over the camp around 3 p. m. m. after heavy fighting that began early in the morning, according to local reports. The army regime introduced extensive airstrikes and shelling into the area, but failed to deter the attack, Kachin media reported, bringing resources closer together. to the KIA.

At least 50 junta infantrymen were reportedly killed and 3 were captured during the war for the base.

The KIA refused to disclose the number of casualties of the junta’s soldiers.

Pro-junta Telegram channels reported that the junta’s military control was temporarily withdrawn from its base because its troops were outnumbered by resistance forces and that they would try to retake it soon.

The KIA’s 6th Brigade in northern Shan State also bombed on Friday using junta warplanes, according to the KIA.

“As far as we know, four KIA members were killed and one was wounded because of the junta’s shelling,” Colonel Naw Bu said. No high-ranking officials were among the dead, he added.

The airstrikes focus on the capture on Thursday of a junta camp at the foot of Wane Lar Mountain, near the town of Mong Ko in Muse township in northern Shan state, near the border of Myanmar with China.

The regime’s army suffered heavy losses in the clashes and the KIA seized a huge amount of weapons and ammunition, the Kachin News Group reported.

On Wednesday, the KIA 12 Battalion and the Shwegu People’s Defense Forces ambushed a junta outpost that had been used as the army’s communications camp near the village of Nag Bat Gyi on the Shwegu-Bhamo highway in Kachin state.

They seized the body of a junta soldier killed in the clashes, as well as weapons, ammunition and rations, Shwegu PDF reported.

The Nga Bat Gyi camp is located just under a kilometer from the town of Shwegu, which serves as a starting point for reinforcements of junta troops deployed in Kachin State, on the Ayeyarwady River.

The KIA has been fighting junta forces in Muse and Kutkai townships in neighboring northern Shan state since June. It is also fighting junta troops along with resistance teams in the Sagaing region.
