NEW YORK (AP) — Kia is recalling more than 427,000 of its Telluride SUVs because of a defect that can cause the cars to move when parked.

According to documents released through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the countershaft and right front driveshaft on some 2020-2024 Tellurides may not be fully engaged. Over time, this can lead to “unintentional vehicle movements” while cars are parked, amplifying the potential threat of an accident.

Kia America has to recall all 2020 to 2023 design years and choose the 2024 Tellurides design year earlier this month, according to NHTSA documents. At the time, no injuries or injuries were reported.

An improper meeting is suspected to be the cause of the axis compromise factor: the recall covers 2020-2024 Tellurides manufactured between January 9, 2019 and October 19, 2023. Kia America estimates that 1% have the defect.

Regarding this issue, according to the recall documents, dealers will update the electronic parking brake software of the affected cars and update the broken middle axles at no cost. Homeowners who have already incurred fixed prices will also receive a refund.

In the meantime, affected Tellurides drivers are asked to manually apply the emergency brake before exiting the vehicle. Drivers can also check if their express vehicle is included in this recall and locate more data on NHTSA’s online page and/or Kia’s recall study platform.

Notification letters to homeowners are also expected to be mailed on May 15, with notification to the broker beginning a few days earlier.

The Associated Press reached out to Irvine, California-based Kia America for comment Sunday.
