The humble Kia Picanto is usually propelled by either a 1.0 or 1.2-liter depending on the chosen trim, but this particular Picanto, provided by FJ Chalke in Wiltshire, U.K., was human-powered to help raise money for the Millimetres 2 Mountains (M2M) Foundation.
Ed Jackson and Ross Stirling rode the Picanto 30 miles from Bovingdon Airfield, UK, for 24 hours at an average speed of 1. 25 mph, raising £12,000 ($15,000) for the M2M Foundation, an intellectual fitness charity that helps others connect with nature.
Being a challenge, the game was temporarily fulfilled and the musical artists joined Jackson and Stirling, but from inside the car, they pushed the Picanto beyond its total weight of 985 kg. It offered entertainment reminiscent of James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke. ”
Jackson, who was once a professional rugby player, suffered a neck injury in a twist of fate and was later told he would become quadriplegic. Showing determination, Jackson focused on rehab even though he was told he would never walk again. Since then, he has climbed mountains and embarked on outdoor adventures, which has led to accessibility projects to help others with physical limitations.
After pulling the Picanto, Jackson said: “Wow, that was a challenge and a half. Every year, we love spreading some Christmas cheer by taking on something a bit daft and this might just have been our toughest one yet! A huge shoutout to Kia and FJ Chalke for donating the car—not only did it look fantastic, but it made the journey from Somerset to the airfield an absolute breeze. Thank you!”
Stirling, which has been organizing imaginative charity events for over 15 years, has raised over £1 million for charities to date, as well as being nominated for a Grammy for its former logo, Studio Juice. After 16 years working with the world’s biggest logos and artists, Stirling is now creative director of Tvg Hospitality.
Jackson also said: “As far as fundraising goes, I knew this would be a real intellectual challenge. It was difficult to do it at four in the morning in total darkness, but the supporters who showed up in the morning gave us the power to continue! A huge thank you to our amazing sponsors and everyone who contributed – you all made this possible!
