Kenworth abandons K500 truck after 14 years

Kenworth Truck Co. retires your K500 off-road truck with serious service after 14 years. The export-only truck is sold basically to oil and fuel exploration and mining consumers in Asia, Russia and Africa.

The PACCAR Inc. logo (NASDAQ: PCAR) has built 283 of the K500’s “flat face” models at its factory in Renton, Washington.

Sintagma Holding purchased the newest Cape Point Kenworth K500 for a gold mining operation from the Chitotolo Mining Company (Sociedade Mineira do Chitotolo) in Luanda, Angola. The first K500 order in 2006 went to Karamay in China from a total order of 8 K500.

“Cape Kenworth K500 has been a stellar truck model and has provided functionality and reliability for our consumers worldwide,” said Laura Bloch, Kenworth’s deputy director general of sales and marketing, in a statement.

The K500 uses a mix of the Kenworth C500 transmission with a modern semi-capot with cab over the engine. The cab is located in front of the front axle for visibility in the workplace with more area than traditional models.

Available in a variety of configurations, adding 6-4, 6-6, 8-8 and 10-10, the shorter and most engineered K500 for on- and off-road use has gained popularity among customers, Kenworth said.

The Kenworth K500 is supplied with a 525-horsepower Cummins engine with 1,650 pound-feet of torque and a 7-speed Allison 4700RDS transmission. It also has AxleTech tandem rear axles valued at 100,000 pounds with a rear platform ratio of 9.59. The front axle is a new Meritor front motor axle valued at 32,000 pounds with a bridge ratio of 9.66.

Kenworth still offers the 963 and C500 models in offshore oil fields. The C500 is also available in the U.S. And Canada. Replacement taxis are not planned at this time, Parietti said.
