Kalihi COVID-19 surge control is only available without an appointment

Confusion at the COVID-19 surge control site in Kalihi today, as other people discovered it with just one appointment.

Hundreds of others covered the other in Kalakaua District Park before testing began at nine a.m., and some said they were surprised they couldn’t line up in their cars and struggled to find parking.

“I parked illegally, I don’t know if you mean that on TV. It would have been great if they had a designated parking lot so everyone knew what to do and could just walk and line up,” said Kyle Kanaka of Kaimuki.

Some other people who made appointments online asked why they still had to wait in line. Despite the initial confusion, those who took control reported that the procedure was fluid and that the checks were performed in 30 minutes or less.

Honolulu City Council member Joey Manahan said organizers will make adjustments for future dates, such as providing chairs for people who can’t stand for a long time. The site extended today’s testing event to 5 p.m.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducts loose COVID-19 tests at 17 Hawaii sites: 15 in Oahu, 1 in Kauai, and 1 on the Big Island. Sites vary and will run over the next two weeks. Click here to register.
