The activists, calling on the government to end all new oil and fuel licenses and authorizations, installed the road blockade from 11 a. m. on Sunday.

Protesters sat on the road, carrying orange banners, and some stuck to the track or locked themselves in each other.

A protester then sprayed orange paint on the nearby Aston Martin showroom on Park Lane.

Photos and footage from the scene showed police trying to communicate with those blocking the road while a cordon was set up around the activists.

Chloe Thomas, 19, a pregnant mother and freelancer from Cannock who joined the action, said: “How can I with my daughter in the next few years where the animals went, where the culture went, where was the good looks, why are there no bees and why can’t I put food in her belly?

“You know it’s bad, right? As citizens, as human beings, as parents and children, we have a duty and a right under British law to ourselves and our loved ones.

Patrick Michael John McCarthy, 67, a caretaker from Telford, who also took part in the protest, said: “Keep in mind that those movements are not easy for any of us.

“It’s uncomfortable, scary and financially draining, so why do it?

“Because we have noticed the devastating fact of the existential threats we face and cannot ‘ignore’ them. The real question is why millions of other people are not in civil resistance than why I am. “

The action comes days after Just Stop Oil protesters threw cans of tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers portrait in the National Gallery and sprayed paint on the rotating panel at New Scotland Yard.

The crusade organisation said it would also protest outdoors in Downing Street every day in October.
