Automakers are notoriously secretive when it comes to long-term products, but that doesn’t stop us from speculating about what will happen, especially in this new era of electrification. The last? It’s the idea that Jeep could enter the all-electric truck game with a Gladiator-sized device meant to take on the Rivian R1T.

Blame, or thank, documents similar to the recent United Auto Workers (UAW) agreements for spilling some of the tea. These are documents detailing similar vital labor promises for UAW members, detailing (to some extent) which cars are scheduled for which production services under a union contract or collective bargaining agreement. Since these things are usually possible for a few years, it’s inevitable that some main points of the product will come up, if you know where to look.

This upcoming Gladiator EV (shown in the hero symbol above) and the similar Wrangler EV are expected to likely ride on the company’s STLA Frame platform, an element recently placed under the 2025 Ram 1500 REV and designed for the service in electrified vehicles. Applications. A range extender option is also very likely, necessarily a small gasoline engine that does not directly power the wheels but serves as a power plant for the onboard battery.

Commentators speculate that none of this will happen until at least 2028, whether this is the style or the calendar year is still up for debate. Specifically, the so-called “Hourly Highlighter” detailing pledges for guaranteed hourly staffing in the latest negotiations circular states that there will be a “next-generation Jeep Wrangler (J70) adding BEVs and REPBs in 2028” planned for the Toledo meeting complex. If you’re puzzled, “BEV” stands for “battery electric vehicle” and “REBP” stands for “range electric paradigm switch” in Stellantis’ corporate parlance. Hooray for acronyms.

Jeep can use all the help it can in terms of sales, a word we didn’t think we’d say even a few years ago. Deliveries of the Wrangler were down a third in the early part of this year compared to last year, and the entire logo was down 25% to 21,927 deliveries in the first two quarters of the 2024 calendar here in Canada. It’s unclear whether the new all-electric models will contribute to this trend. South of the border, the Wrangler is down just 9%. and continues to outperform the Bronco by about a share (77,204 vs. 50,152).
