Japanese-themed commemorative lawn to celebrate Fraserburgh’s ‘Scottish Samurai’

A northeastern industrialist is celebrated with a memorial lawn in his more than a century after his death.

Plans for a lawn in honor of Thomas Blake Glover have received the shade of green from his former birthplace on Fraserburgh Commerce Street.

Aberdeenshire City Council leads the task of marking the entrepreneur’s legacy, such as Scottish Samurai, in the position that will be Glover Birthposition.

Glover was born in the city and became a key figure in the industrialization of Japan, helping to discover the shipbuilding company turned Mitsubishi.

Its area no longer exists and the 15-17 Commerce Street has been empty since the 1940s.

Soon, however, you will be in a courtyard faithful to the Japanese theme that tells the story of Glover’s life.

A report through Aberdeenshire City Council officials hopes that the lawn will serve as a tourist charm and restore an “unsightly” area.

It says: “The proposal is to create a memorial lawn for public use on a vacant lot in the centre of Fraserburgh.

“In doing so, the proposal would give the general appearance of the domain and, as such, the proposal is favourably seen, as it would re-apply an unsightly domain.

“The proposed use of the site would inspire public visitors and the active use of the site and therefore would have no negative effect on the character of the city centre.

“In principle, it is considered to support the energy and viability of the city centre, and would not have a negative effect on the use of land and surrounding equipment.”

Glover died in December 1911, aged 73, at his home in Tokyo and buried in Sakamoto International Cemetery in Nagasaki.
