January Zoning Appeals Board: No more short-term rentals, no more Harry’s Hoagie Shoppe to serve alcohol

Here’s a rundown of the January Zoning Board calls:

A request from Silverautomobile was approved to identify a car rental use at 200 Duvall Drive, recently occupied by Audi Greenville. Silverautomobile needs to use existing main construction and parking for car rental purposes. No adjustments to the construction are proposed.

The rental business will be controlled as an accessory of the car dealership, with Audi Greenville assisting rental customers.

The council rejected two programs for a special exception for a hotel/motel, also known as short-term rental. Applicants William Adam Taylor and Hunter Moss were represented through Randy Hiller.

The properties, located at 20 Howe Street, are part of a 13-unit townhome complex called West End Cottages. The city concluded that the proposed use “will have significant negative effects on surrounding lands” and “is not compatible with surrounding lands” as exists in advertising zoning districts.

After discussing several factors, such as public comments supporting the passage of the special exception permit and the fact that 3 permanent tenants live in the neighborhood, the council rejected either request.

The council approved Andrew Fallis, the applicant for Harry’s Hoagie Shoppe at 1700 East North Street, to serve liquor by granting special exception permission to the company, which is required in C-1 districts. Although the business has been open since July 2022, Fallis says the call to serve alcohol comes after visitor feedback and only beer and wine will be served.
