Tata, owner of Jaguar Land Rover, has shown the location of the UK’s electric vehicle battery factory.

The Indian conglomerate has announced that it will invest £4 billion in the structure of the giant factory in Bridgwater, Somerset.

Agratas, the Indian conglomerate’s battery business, said it had brought land to the Gravity Smart Campus, near the M5.

It was once the site of a Royal Artillery Factory from World War II until 2008.

The facility is expected to create approximately 4,000 jobs in the region. The UK was shown to have beaten Spain as host in July after around £500 million in government subsidies were provided.

The company aims to produce its first batteries in Somerset in 2026.

“The 40 GWh plant is expected to be the largest battery factory in the country and, until the early 2030s, will contribute to almost part of the battery production capacity planned for the UK automotive sector,” Agratas said.

It comes as the U. K. and Europe struggle to keep pace with China in a bid to produce batteries for its electric vehicle industry.

At present, there is only one other gigafactory in the pipeline, in Sunderland and developed through Nissan.
