Proactive investors: The owner of Jaguar Land Rover has shown plans for what will be the UK’s largest EV battery factory when it opens in 2026.
Tata Group (NS:TAMO) said the £4 billion plant would be built near Bridgwater in Somerset after land was secured through its Agratas battery business.
Last summer, the Indian conglomerate announced it would go ahead with the task after securing a slew of millions of dollars in taxpayer investments from Rishi Sunak’s government, estimated at around £500 million.
Tata, which last month announced the retirement of two blast furnaces in Port Talbot, Wales, announced today that the plant will be located on Puriton’s Gravity Smart Campus, a commercial teland where a former World War II munitions factory was dismantled in 2008.
With a planned production capacity of 40 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery cells per year, Agratas expects that by the early 2030s, the plant will supply almost part of the UK automotive industry’s EV battery needs.
News of the plant, which is expected to create around 4,000 jobs and many more in the supply chain, is a boon for the British car sector after the Britishvolt battery start-up collapsed last year, after failing to access a promised £100 million government subsidy. . .
Tesla boss Elon Musk, Somerset as a possible location for a gigafactory four years ago, made several trips to the region, among other sites across the country, and floated the 600-acre Gravity business park as the possible ideal home.
