Woodbridge, Ont. Developer Italo Ferrari apologized for his conduct at Monday’s city council meeting.
“I am writing to you officially for the comment I made at the December 12, 2022 City Council meeting,” Ferrari said in a letter sent to the city this afternoon.
“My comment that erecting a fence to protect assets might seem like a ‘concentration camp’ was beside the point and was offensive, especially to members of the Jewish community. “
“Sincerely this suggestion. “
“I was given a variety of words at the time, and I guarantee it may not happen again,” Ferrari wrote.
Ferrari is the chief executive officer of Leisure Meadows Community Living Inc. , owner of the former Sault Area Hospital on Queen Street East.
As SooToday first reported last night, Hall 3 Councillor Angela Caputo and Ward Five County Corey Gardi walked out of Monday’s council assembly after Ferrari used the word “concentration camp” to describe what the decrepit hospital would look like if it were safely fenced.
Councillors left the council room near the end of a 50-minute consultation in which Ferrari blamed the entire network for the state of the old hospital.
Ferrari answering Mayor Matthew Shoemaker’s questions about repeated burglaries at waterfront buildings.
Earlier in the day, the mayor issued a categorical statement about Ferrari’s conduct before the city council.
“During Monday night’s debate on the factor of ownership criteria for the former general hospital, the owner’s representative, Italo Ferrari, said that because of the difficulties he encountered in preventing the raid of the former general hospital, he deserves to erect a ’10-foot fence to close it off as a concentration camp. ‘ Shoemaker said.
“In the heat of the debate, I did not denounce Mr. Ferrari’s ignorance as I have done at the time. All of Mr. Ferrari in front of the town hall showed an astonishing lack of self-awareness.
“However, this specific comment is surprising to the point of a strong condemnation not easy. The Nazis used the concentration camps to engage in genocide. Using the atrocities of the Holocaust in a debate about the criteria for maintaining a decrepit building shows a whole lack of dignity. “
“I have asked him not to speak to Mr. Ferrari or one of his representatives unless and until he apologizes. “
“However, I understand that it will be to deal with this company for compliance and ownership standards, so unfortunately, communication across some departments will remain Array. “
“In the meantime, I inspire Mr. Ferrari to do the right thing and for the callousness he has demonstrated,” the mayor said in his statement.
Ferrari’s apology won for the whole town at 15:59 today.
