Italian police have shown that they have foiled a plot to borrow the image of legendary Formula 1 pioneer Enzo Ferrari and demand a ransom.
Ferrari, founder of the company that produces some of the world’s most beloved and fastest cars, died in 1988 at the age of 90 after turning the company’s upward-nosed horse logo into a globally recognized brand.
Investigators from Nuoro on the island of Sardinia said 34 other people had been arrested in a large operation involving helicopters and paratrooper regiment officials.
They suspected that a gang had planned to ask a ransom to the circle of relatives or the Ferrari company after hunting the body.
Police said the plot was uncovered in an investigation into arms and drug trafficking.
Ferrari is buried in a family grave in the San Cataldo cemetery in Modena, near the Ferrari factory in Maranello, central Italy.
The gang members had allegedly inspected the site several times.
Hugh Jackman is reportedly in talks to play Mr. Ferrari in a film directed by Michael Mann.
Christian Bale originally hoped to play the role of entrepreneur, but reportedly resigned due to considerations of the weight he would have to gain for the role.
Robert De Niro is also said to have links to another biographical film about Mr. Ferrari, but it is known how far the allocation has progressed.
