Land of Bad is not based on a true story, in the sense that the characters and conditions of the film are entirely invented. That said, Land of Bad is based on a true story, in that Liam Hemsworth’s character, AF Sgt. JJ Kinney, was partially influenced by a real JTAC instructor at Fort Irwin, California, named Jason Kinney, who served as a representative in the film.
Director William Eubank, who also co-wrote the script with David Frigerio, named his main character after the real Kinney. However, the concept for the film emerged before Eubank met the real Kinney. He asked @davidfrigerio and me to go exercise with them at Fort Irwin. He was a JTAC instructor at the time. He’s retired now, but he came here to advise us while we were filming.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Eubank explained that he and Frigerio released a less accurate initial draft of the script for Land of Bad after the genuine Kinney invited the writers to follow the JATCs of genuine life for two weeks. “[Jason] Kinney, who was a real JTAC instructor at Fort Irwin, called us and said, ‘Hey, you have to come and see what we’re doing,'” Eubank said. “So we went there and stayed for two weeks, calling all nine lines for the F-35s. So it replaced the way we looked at everything, adding the script. We met real drone operators and just abandoned the way we had written the initial film. We start again.
