LANSING, Mich. – When it comes to providing life-saving care, innovation is important. That’s why McLaren Greater Lansing is putting wise structure practices into practice while making his paintings on his health care campus, which will open in early 2022.
Instead of structuring the massive eight-foot-wide rack sections that separate CVC ducts, electrical cables, and pipes, the structure team built this critical infrastructure into a local workspace before hitting it in the hospital.
“Prefabricating those racks in a controlled indoor environment is safer and allows our professional staff a more comfortable environment than they would face in the winter without blood and the heat of Michigan’s summer,” said Austin Holcomb, director of service control at Mc GreaterLaren Lansing. “Instead of building those sections on their heads, our staff gathers them on the floor before lifting them up and reconnecting them to the assignment site.”
This structure strategy is new in our state, and the new McLaren Hospital is one of the first examples of use in central Michigan.
Many talented professionals worry about the prefabrication process, adding plumbers and pipers, sheet steel staff, electricians and carpenters. “All the hours spent putting the shelves together in the warehouse are hours that those staff don’t want to spend on the task site,” Holcomb said. “With the shortage of professional staff in Michigan, it’s about completing this infrastructure beforehand.”
Once the large sections of the pipe are assembled, they are cut into 20-foot sections and sent to the structure site to roll to the precise place where each express component will have to go. As Holcomb says, “it looks and’s going up.”
McLaren Greater Lansing’s new campus is expected to open in the spring of 2022. Once finished, a 240-bed hospital, cancer center, medical center construction, and other amenities will be located to help deliver physical care, educational opportunities, and medical research.
