On Tuesday, five automakers signed agreements with the California Air Resources Board to put in place cleaner emissions criteria over the next few years. BMW, Ford, Honda, Volkswagen Group and Volvo will reduce vehicle emissions between the 2021 and 2026 style years.
Contrary to European rules, which impose a fine on car brands if they exceed the overall fleet average by the amount of CO2 emitted on the basis of kilometres, CARB has other targets for cars and light trucks depending on their parent. Footprint. But of the five OEMs it has committed to reduce the amount of CO2 produced through their cars according to the kilometer by approximately 17% by 2026. The new agreement is very similar to last year’s announced, but with a revised schedule that now extends until 2026.
Specifically, CO2 emissions from small cars would be reduced from 157 g/mile in 2021 to 130 g/mile by 2026, Cars from 215g/mile to 178g/mile, soft small trucks from 195g/mile to 162g/mile and soft trucks from 335g/mile to 278g/mile, with a formula for adjusting cars that are between small and occupied areas. As a reminder, the new EU average for the total fleet, which came into force in 2020, imposes heavy fines on any car manufacturer whose fleet average exceeds 152 g/mile (95 g/km).
In addition, OEMs can download safe CARB credits for the advent of new emission relief technologies, as well as for the sale of more plug-in hybrid, mobile fuel and battery vehicles.
Several automakers are notably absent from the voluntary agreement with California. General Motors, Toyota and Fiat Chrysler have joined the Trump administration’s efforts to undo CARB’s ability to with pollutants in favor of their own weakened standards.
