Another self-driving joint venture, you say? Yes, they seem to be growing on trees lately, but this one is a big deal because one of the companies involved has a bunch of experience in the field already and the other has great big Scrooge McDuck-like deep pockets. I’ll let you guess which is which.

The company signed earlier this year, and companies have been running at the main points ever since. In any case, Motional is expected to start testing completely driverless cars this year, with the goal of having a level four autonomous robotaxi generation until 2022.
Does that sound like an ambitious goal to you? yes, but that doesn’t sound crazy either. Pointing to functional autonomy but still geofencing and conditioned to a ton of variables in the equation, and as we have noticed in corporations like Waymo, it is not science fiction in general at the moment.
“Motional, in all its past forms, has been at the forefront of the driverless generation for decades. Our DNA, a mixture of Aptiv’s complex generation experience and Hyundai’s leadership in vehicle production, studies and progression, is strong and positioning us fundamentally to replace the way other people evolve in their lives,” said Karl Iagnemma, President and CEO of Motional, in a statement.
Motional is in Boston but will also have groups in Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Santa Monica, Singapore and Seoul.
