Hyundai IONIQ five drives new electric vehicle export record with more than 68,000 shipped in 2024

Hyundai and Kia set a new record by shipping around 708,000 electrified cars from Korea in 2024. With more than 68,000 exports, the IONIQ is Hyundai’s fifth best-selling electric vehicle overseas.

Since launching in February 2021, Hyundai’s electric SUV has continued winning over buyers around the world. With a bold design based on its first production car, the Pony, Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 stands out from the crowd.

Its futuristic design is complemented by a long driving range (+300 miles), fast charging (under 20 minutes), and a tech-loaded interior.

As Hyundai’s best-selling electric vehicle overseas, the five IONIQs helped Hyundai set a new “green” export record in 2024.

With 68,227 exports, the IONIQ 5 was Hyundai’s third top-selling electrified (EV and hybrid) model outside of its home market, following the Tucson Hybrid (93,547) and Kona Hybrid (73,553). Kia also set an export record with over 69,500 Niro Hybrids and almost 42,500 EV6s sold overseas.

With 707,853 EVs and hybrids exported in 2024, Hyundai and Kia’s eco-friendly exports have surged by nearly 160% since 2020 (270,000). Since then, their share of exports has almost doubled from 17% to 32%

The United States, Canada and Mexico accounted for more than 55% of Hyundai and Kia’s total exports last year, followed by Europe with 18. 7%.

Hyundai and Kia are bolstering EV production in Korea and overseas. Kia’s Gwangmyeong EVO Plant, where the low-cost EV3 is built, opened in October 2024.

Hyundai’s new EV plant in Georgia also began production last October. The 2025 IONIQ 5 refresh was the first to roll off the assembly line. Hyundai upgraded its top-selling IONIQ 5, giving it even more driving range, improved style, and an NACS port to charge at Tesla Superchargers.

The IONIQ 9, Hyundai’s first three-row electric SUV, will be built along it. Now that Hyundai and Kia electric cars are now eligible for the $7,500 EV tax credits for the first time, Korean automakers are looking forward to another big year in 2025.
