Electrified cars are no longer science fiction. They are gaining popularity, car brands after the launch of new models and brands of committed electric vehicles. Hyundai has the latest.
The Hyundai Ioniq, which began as a Hyundai five-door electrified compact car, is now the namesake of an electric battery-committed logo introduced by the Korean manufacturer on Sunday.
The Ioniq brand project, Hyundai announced, will combine what the company says Hyundai electric cars are offering lately (fast charging, spacious interiors, battery strength) with futuristic inventions that mix technology, service and design. And the strategy is aggressive: Hyundai needs to sell a million battery-powered electric cars and “become a world leader in electric cars” until 2025.
Ioniq cars will use a platform committed to electric vehicles, called the Electric Global Modular Platform. With E-GMP, Hyundai promises “abundant battery life” and fast charging capabilities. In addition, Ioniq cars will have wireless connectivity and other features that create a “smart living space,” Hyundai said.
Models introduced under the Ioniq logo will be named with numbers and will follow a pattern: even numbers for sedans and numbers for SUVs. The first will be the Ioniq five, a medium-sized CUV that can be expected in early 2021, which will be based on the concept of forty-five EVs at the 2019 Frankfurt International Auto Show.
Then, in 2022, Ioniq 6 will follow. It will be in Hyundai’s Prophecy EV concept. The “great SUV” Ioniq 7 will arrive in early 2024.
This is not the first time Hyundai has created a new logo for one of its existing vehicles. His luxury arm, Genesis, began as a sedan in the late 2000s. In 2015, Hyundai separated the Genesis call to its own luxury logo. Soon after, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which also existed at the time, was killed in 2016. The original Hyundai Genesis sedan has been re-called to the Genesis G80.
The resolution of launching an electrified autonomous logo is also for Polestar, which is jointly owned by Volvo and its parent company, Geely. The Polestar 1 is a hybrid car, but the Polestar 2, the logo moment offering, is battery electric only.
The original Hyundai Ioniq was introduced in 2016 as a five-door style that will be held in electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric battery. His call is a coat of the words “ion” and “unique”.
