Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than 147,000 U. S. cars due to broken charging units, federal protection regulators said.

Kia America is recalling 48,232 cars and Hyundai Motor America is recalling 98,878 cars, according to separate notices posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

According to the notices, “the Integrated Charge Control Unit (ICCU) may simply be broken and prevent charging of the 12-volt battery, which may result in a loss of motive power. “
