Hyundai and Kia recall cars due to charging unit issues

Hyundai and Kia are recalling a total of 147,110 vehicles, adding the Ioniq and EV6 electric vehicles, because an internal component of the cars can prevent their batteries from charging, federal auto protection regulators said.

The recalled Hyundai and Kia cars feature what the manufacturers call an “integrated rate unit,” which is responsible for charging the car’s 12-volt backup battery.

But the charging unit may not work well and will likely lead to a loss of power for the driver when driving the car. Driving a potential loss of power increases the risk of a crash, Hyundai and Kia said in recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recalled cars through Hyundai, which included several Genesis cars, were manufactured between October 2021 and March 2024, according to recall documents. Kia cars were produced between November 2021 and February 2024.
