South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are the latest electric car makers to announce they will adopt Tesla charging for cars sold in the United States.
The duo, part of the same automotive organization that also comes with the premium Genesis brand, joins a growing number of legacy automakers planning to install the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port. Tesla in long-term cars. with BMW, Ford, GM, Hyundai, JLR, Mercedes-Benz and the Stellantis Group, among others.
Kia and Hyundai say their cars sold in the US will come with a charging station starting in the fourth quarter of 2024, giving them access to more than 12,000 high-speed Tesla charging stations. The additional measure suggests that NACS will be the industry standard, at least in the US, Canada and Mexico, rather than the chosen port of the Combined Charging System (CCS), subsidized through Volkswagen and the network of Electrify America charges.
The move will double the size of the DC fast charging network available to Hyundai EV drivers, the manufacturer said. Hyundai Motor Company’s chief operating officer José Muñoz said, “Our collaboration with Tesla marks another milestone in our commitment to delivering exceptional EV experiences to our customers. This new alliance will provide Hyundai EV owners confidence in their ability to conveniently charge their vehicles”.
Owners of existing and future Hyundai and Kia EVs with CCS charge ports will have access to the Tesla Supercharging Network from the first quarter of 2025. Hyundai and Kia both say they will offer an adapter to these customers, as well as adapters so that NACS-equipped cars can also fill their batteries at CCS chargers.
“Opening up our charging network to more electric cars supports our project to drive the global transition to sustainable energy,” said Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s senior director of charging.
The momentum is obviously on Tesla’s side, and the faster the EV market creates a universal DC charging solution for everyone, the better. That said, this is a foreign trend. The CCS charging port is not unusual for fast-charging stations in Europe. and the United Kingdom, adding Tesla’s superchargers, which have recently begun to open up to other electric vehicles.
