The world intended to see the Hyperion hydrogen supercar as a prototype months ago, but like so many other things, the coronavirus got in the way. When the New York Motor Show was cancelled in April, Hyperion had to abandon plans to start brilliantly with the XP-1 and instead we got today’s video announcement. And even the virtual revelation is different from what it would originally look like. The company had planned to perform a small occasion broadcast live on the user from its headquarters in Orange, California. But that has also been cancelled.
The good news is that what Hyperion stores today is probably as impressive as it would have been in April, because every time we see a new supercar with outrageous specs, there’s a wave of excitement. Add to that the company’s plans to use H2 as an energy source, and you may believe that anyone who paid attention in New York will also be listening now. The XP-1 will be a compatible soft vehicle (less than 2275 pounds) with four-wheel drive that is expected to pass from 0 to 60 miles according to the hour in less than 2.2 seconds and have a more sensitive speed of more than 221 mph. “Hyperion is first and foremost an energy company whose project is to supply white and renewable energy in the world,” Angelo Kafantaris, CEO of Hyperion, recently told me. “We have known hydrogen as the most productive energy vector to achieve this.” Kafantaris said building a supercar was the most productive way to tell this story and called xp-1 “Hyperion’s first bankruptcy.” The other bankruptcies are designed to help how Hyperion will bring hydrogen to the rest of the world.
“Once we identify that the story can be better told through a vehicle, we learned that it’s not just a hypercar,” he said. “This is not going to succeed in a giant enough network. So they started us with the hypercar, and then they started telling us the story of the infrastructure adventure we’ve been through and the product we’ve developed.”
Once the XP-1 and Hyperion’s hydrogen replenishment plans have been made public, Hyperion will move to display other cars it believes will work with its hydrogen powertrain and network paints. “This is just the beginning and there’s a lot more to come,” Kafantaris said.
