In 2022, we have noticed massive advances in the world of robotics. On Tesla’s AI Day 2022, the company unveiled the first two running prototypes of its so-called Tesla Bot: a walking humanoid named Optimus, built with parts, and a second, more complex edition of Optimus that the company needs to put into production.
Optimus is built around Tesla’s autonomous AI, however, instead of being designed to navigate roads and perceive traffic lights, AI has been shifted to negotiate with the rest of the world and trip over objects and humans. Speaking on AI Day, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the robot is designed to be the kind of household help you might one day buy as a gift for your parents.
“Optimus is designed to be an incredibly capable robot manufactured in very large volumes, probably, ultimately, millions of units,” Musk said. “And it charges a lot less than a car. “
Google is running on bots that can perceive indistinct words like “I spilled my glass” and then figure out the steps to fix the problem.
It’s only Tesla who puts its AI into physical form. Google is also reshaping the world of robotics by equipping its brain learning complex devices with a robot body. In 2022, Google put its synthetic intelligence technology, called Palm Say-Can, into robots built through Everyday Robots (a spin-off of Google’s X initiative). Instead of programming itself with commands like “If this, then that,” the robot’s brain uses device learning to perceive confusing commands like “I’m hungry” and then works out the steps to solve the problem.
Google and Tesla may not be the corporations that come to mind when you think of assistance bots. But those tech giants are the face of a new frontier in robot design: ultra-intelligent droids designed to seamlessly navigate our world and interact with humans. therein.
In this week’s episode of What the Future, we take a close look at the evolution of robotics and corporations to introduce more robots into our lives, blurring the lines between man and machine. From Optimus to “self-healing” slime bots, and all the weird and glorious bots in between, check out the video above to see which bots you should watch out for next year.
