WEST PALM BEACH (AP) — A 98-year-old West Palm Beach man died Friday morning after falling from a downtown sidewalk and being hit by a car, city police said Saturday.

John O’Hare was walking on the sidewalk on the east side of Olive Avenue, near the intersection with Evernia Street, when he fell off the sidewalk into the street. At the intersection, a 73-year-old West Palm Beach woman driving a 2024 Volvo westbound on Evernia received the green light and began to accelerate.

He struck O’Hare, who died instantly, West Palm Beach police spokesman Mike Jachles said. The incident happened Friday around 11 a. m. The intersection closed for about 3 hours and reopened around 2 p. m. m. , Jachles said.

The driver of the Volvo was taken to the hospital after the crash, where she was treated for minor injuries and released. The West Palm Beach Police Department is investigating the incident but has not filed any charges against the driver.

Jachles calls the incident a “horrific tragedy. ” O’Hare’s death marks the first road fatality in West Palm Beach this year, he said.

The area around the crash site has wide, shaded sidewalks with bicycle racks, a public trash can and parking meters. Residents on walks, runners and parents with strollers often crisscross Olive Avenue to walk toward the cafés and shops or the Intracoastal and parks in downtown West Palm Beach.

O’Hare was living in a nearby assisted living facility before the crash, Jachles said. Investigators are awaiting the effects of a medical examination to determine if O’Hare had a medical incident that caused him to fall from the sidewalk into the street.
