Honda sells its UK factory to a developer

In 2019, Honda Motor announced a restructuring of its global car production operations, which included ceasing production at the UK plant in July 2021, at the end of the existing Civic Hatchback design cycle. Following the announcement of the closure, Honda pledged to responsibly leave a lasting legacy for Swindon.

Jason Smith, Honda’s UK Manufacturing Director, said: “We are delighted to have met a competent new owner for the site. Through our engagement with Panattoni and initial discussions with Swindon Council, we are confident that the new owner can lead progress forward in a commercially timely manner and generate interesting customers for Swindon and the wider community.

Upon completion of production on July 30, 2021, Honda will immediately begin decommissioning the Swindon site. The site is expected to be legally superseded in the spring of 2022, and once the requirements are obtained, Panattoni will begin regeneration and redevelopment in a while. after that.

James Watson, Panattoni’s chief development officer, said: “Panattoni has committed to making an investment of over £700 million in the site to attract new employers and existing businesses looking to expand to Swindon. We will be working intensively with Honda and Swindon City Council, as well as the network and its representatives to regenerate the site.

Matthew Byrom, Managing Director of Panattoni UK, said: “The redevelopment of this strategic employment site will provide thousands of new opportunities in roles that support the functioning of the local and regional economy.

Honda will evaluate opportunities for small stretches on the roadside that are not mandatory for Panattoni’s advancement and are used through neighboring communities.
