Honda does not have a way to compete with the Jeep Wrangler or the new Ford Bronco, however, the Japanese manufacturer is obviously not in a position to deliver this market entirely to its rivals. As Carbuzz discovered, Honda recently implemented the “Trailsport” badge on the logo, suggesting that the logo will soon get its tires dirty at least a little more.
While we’d like to see Honda’s vision on a compromised SUV, the new Trailsport badge is more likely to designate an advanced edition of an existing style or, potentially, some other access to the crossover space. Currently, the Honda Passport Midsize SUV is the style for which Honda aggressively maximizes its off-road capabilities. It is conceivable that they need to build on this with a variant of Passport Trailsport, although this call is a bit crazy.
Maybe a Ridgeline Trailsport is what’s waiting for you. An off-road edition of Honda’s impressive midsize pickup truck would be a no-brainer. It would also be to instill some machismo in the van, which never hurts the van market. See Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison or Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro for examples.
Finally, the new nameplate can be deployed in a new vehicle. Honda would seem to have access in the maximum crossover/SUV segments, but can brands have enough? Perhaps a more physically powerful significant style of the CR-V, which runs through grocery stores, is in the same preparation as The Bronco Sport for The Escape?
Whatever vehicle the Trailsport badge is placed on, it helps Honda take advantage of one of the toughest trends in the automotive market.
