Hitachi and Penske Launch Large-Scale Electric Truck Charging Pilot Project

California, March 19, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi America, Ltd. (Hitachi), Hitachi Energy and Penske Truck Leasing announced the launch of a large-scale centralized charging solution for electric trucks. This innovative task supports Penske’s electric truck consumer deployments in the Stockton, California area.

For this pilot initiative, Hitachi Energy provided Penske with its Grid-eMotion® Fleet EV charging system. The existing built-in fast charging (DC) solution is designed to expand and offer multi-megawatt charging capabilities, tailored to meet the not-so-easy needs of truck fleets of various sizes.

The formula’s new features come with its ability to reduce space requirements by up to 60% over traditional loading formulas. In addition, it reduces wiring needs by up to 40%, ensuring effective use of resources while maintaining high-capacity charging for electric cars (EVs).

Penske has pioneered the adoption of battery-electric application vehicles and has invested heavily in testing, maintaining and expanding the charging infrastructure to support those vehicles. Hitachi Energy’s Grid-eMotion Fleet charging formula in Stockton is already being used to qualify a growing number of electric cars in light, medium and heavy-duty applications. Its 10-station formula can qualify up to 10 on-site trucks at up to one hundred kW or five trucks up to two hundred kW, demonstrating its versatility and scalability for Penske’s fleet operations.
