Two years after its closure in 2022, the historic Lin Heung teahouse is reopening its doors to consumers at its original Wellington Street site.
Known as one of Hong Kong’s oldest restaurants with more than a century of history, Lin Heung Tea House or Lin Heung Lau first closed in 2019 due to an expired lease. It reopened in 2020 but finally closed in 2022 due to losses suffered from the pandemic. Today, the tea room is back to life more powerful than ever with a few improvements.
Lin Heung Tea House is one of the few places that still serves outdated dim sum — run into the dining room, pushing carts loaded with bamboo steamers filled with your favorite dishes. The newly reopened teahouse will continue this culture and retain all of its old menu, adding its iconic red meat liver siu mai, steamed poultry bun, and lotus seed paste bun, to satisfy your nostalgia cravings.
However, some tweaks have been made, perhaps for the better. The interior has been renovated to whiten its appearance and make it more aesthetically appealing. The biggest substitution occurs on the floor, which now houses a tea room offering hand-squeezed beverages. Takeaway, made from the same tea leaves served upstairs. This was done to appeal to the younger generation, who would possibly not have so many memories of the Lin Heung Tea House.
Although the former owners are no longer interested in running the tea room, this reopening is only imaginable thanks to the combined efforts of its former employees, who continue to paint on the Wellington Street premises.
