Electric cars have many advantages over cars that still use an internal combustion engine. They are much more efficient, quieter, and have much more torque than their gasoline counterparts. But we are still a long way from achieving parity of value between engines. In other words, electric cars are expensive.
One place where you can find great deals, however, is rental company Hertz, which currently has more than 2,100 electric cars for sale, more of which are enough to qualify for the IRS’s used white vehicle tax credit.
Hertz has added many electric vehicles to its fleet as part of the company’s decarbonization plan. In 2021, it revealed plans to buy 100,000 Teslas. However, the arguable automaker had delivered less than a portion of them two years later, and repair times are long. caused through consumers caused the rental company to get rid of many of those Teslas and diversify its fleet, adding Polestars, Kias, and Chevrolets.
Last January, we learned that Hertz plans to sell about 20,000 of its electric cars, and lately there are 2,115 electric cars up for grabs among the 31,134 cars for sale on its used car sales site.
There are 761 Teslas for sale, 63 of which are Model 3s worth less than $25,000, the maximum value of the IRS’s blank used vehicle tax credit. Some of them have circled the community several times, with more than 90,000 miles (145,000 km) on the clock, but there are others with less than 50,000 miles (80,500 km).
You can get better deals if you need a Chevrolet Bolt: Hertz lately has 1,178 Bolt EUVs (and 8 other Bolt EVs) for sale. All of those cars are reasonable enough to qualify for the white used vehicle tax credit, and many of them are examples of low mileage with less than 10,000 miles (16,000 km) on the odometer.
There are also a handful of other electric car makes and models available. For example, you can choose from one of the 126 Subaru Solterras, which range from $27,027 to $33,002. And there are 42 Kia EV6s, ranging from $27,120 to $39,901.
Not everyone reading this will be completely comfortable buying an old rental car, given the complicated lives those cars lead. But if you’re feeling brave, you can save a lot compared to buying a new one. For the record, the only thing that happened about the bad thing about the old rental Ford Ka I had was a worn-out clutch; That’s not a challenge an electric vehicle can face.
