Yesterday, General Motors announced the call and prompt availability in Europe of its e-bike. The €3,400 ARĪV fuses accordions to be bought in trunks or bought on trains. Intelligent? Certainly. Unique? Not so much.
It’s worth it for a large automotive company to invest in motorcycles, but adding a battery to foldable motorcycles is rarely as cutting-edge as it sounds. in the game. Ironically, 3 of those brands have automotive connections.
The motorcycles, from Brompton, Gocycle, Hummingbird and Volt, are luxurious and expensive, which is a testament to the generation they flow with. Two also feature carbon composite frames, which reduces weight but price.
BROMPTON
Brompton makes the world’s most iconic folding motorcycle and has been doing so since London since 1981. The motorcycle’s patented, white, intelligent folding mechanism has replaced little since then, and the brand’s electric motorcycle looks quite similar to the models in the company’s stable. However, the Brompton Electric is a technological marvel, with a combination of transmission and battery developed in conjunction with Williams Advanced Engineering of Formula 1.
The Brompton Electric, which starts at £2595, includes a 300Wh battery, a lightweight and rugged front hub motor, pedal torque sensors and connectivity.
The build-up of human power with pedal support adds around 6kg compared to a popular 10kg Brompton, with the battery contained in a detachable front handlebar bag.
GOCYCLE
Gocycle was created through engineer Richard Thorpe, who left McLaren Cars for Formula 1 in 2002 to discover his brand of battery-powered motorcycles.
Initially a more compact than foldable electric bike, the first Gocycle had a monocoque frame, folding chain base, and small wheels that could be easily undone to create a smaller package. Meanwhile, the new GX has a hinge that allows full frame to bend.
After folding, the wheels of the GX align, making it easy to move the folded motorcycle through the saddle. Remove the seatpost from the motorcycle saddle for an even smaller space.
Like other Gocycle models, the GX is powered via a 250-watt front-hub motor, with a detachable 300Wh battery hidden in the aluminum frame. (In the U. S. ) In the U. S. and Canada, the GX is supplied with a 500-watt motor. )
The GX weighs 17. 8kg and retails for £2,899.
HUMMINGBIRD
The Hummingbird is the lightest of the motorcycles shown here, weighing 10. 3 kg, eminently portable.
Launched in 2016 through corporate founder Petre Cranciun, the original Hummingbird was designed to be one of the lightest folding motorcycles possible and achieved a featherweight of 6. 9kg thanks to a composite automotive frame. It is built for Hummingbird through Prodrive, a Milton Keynes Workshop that hand-manufactures race car kits for Aston Martin, Subaru and Volkswagen.
The Hummingbird has CNC-machined aluminum rear debris rotating around the rear bracket. To make a smaller package, turn the rear wheel, bend the handlebar power and lower the saddle.
The electric Hummingbird has a 250-watt motor in the rear wheel hub. Priced at £4495, it’s the most expensive of the 4 motorcycles on display, but also the easiest to propel at top speed.
VOLT
Some electric motorcycles are powered through hub motors, usually on the front wheel. The Volt Axis has the so-called mid-motor which, as the call suggests, places the motor in the middle of the frame at the rear. Most standard-sized high-end electric motorcycles are powered through those rear support motors than from either wheel.
The aluminum Axis has a bicycle chain; it has a carbon synchronous belt drive from Gates of the U. S. , the company that makes drive belts for cars and motorcycles. Although slightly less effective than a chain, belt drives are solid, quiet, low maintenance, and even more clean.
Using the Shimano E6000 crankshaft engine, the Axis also features a Di2 “electronic shift lever”. This makes the shifts super smooth and is the kind of feature you see on high-end professional racing bikes. You can also opt for automatic gear shifting, which will be a boon for many.
The Axis, which weighs 22. 1kg and sells for £3099, has a 418Wh battery that powers the Shimano Steps electric motorcycle drive system.

These four folding electric bikes provide pedal assist that the accelerator force popular for electric bikes. Each reaches up to 15 mph demanded by the EU.
