GM to Invest $920 Million to Prepare Ohio Engine Plant for Long-Term Production

A GM spokesperson told Automotive News that the automaker plans to move existing workers from the Moraine plant (pictured here) to Brookville as it ramps up production there.

General Motors plans to spend $920 million to expand its DMAX engine operation near Dayton, Ohio, and prepare for long-term production of internal combustion powertrain products for heavy-duty trucks.

The automaker said it will expand the existing 250,000 square feet in Brookville, Ohio, by building a 1. 1 million-square-foot addition and incorporating new gadgets and technology. GM did not disclose the main points or timelines for the long-term products.

“This investment reinforces our commitment to leading the HD truck market with the Duramax strength under the hood that consumers love,” Mike Trevorrow, GM’s vice president of North American production, said in a statement. “Plus, it’s on point, a testament to the tough paints and determination of our DMAX team members in the state of Ohio who build world-class powertrain products. “

DMAX opened as a joint venture between GM and Isuzu Diesel Services of America in 1999 near Moraine, Ohio, to build Duramax diesel engines for Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. Since last year, DMAX is one hundred percent owned by GM.

Brookville opened in 2021 and manufactures engine parts for Moraine’s operation. A GM spokesperson told Automotive News that the automaker plans to move existing workers from the Moraine plant to Brookville as it ramps up production there.

“We have no announcements to make at this time beyond the existing product for the Moraine plant, however, after the structure of this engine program, the plant may be right when we compare the long-term allocation of the program,” the spokesperson said.

Carl Kennebrew, foreign president of the Electrical and Communications Workers International Union of America, which represents hourly staff at DMAX, said at the GM that he sees “what’s to come” for the Brookville operation.

“This historic announcement of investment and expansion is a testament to the painting ethos of IUE-CWA members at this company and I couldn’t be prouder,” Kennebrew said.
