LORDSTOWN – Now that with the last permit General Motors needed to begin construction of its next-generation mobile battery production facility, concrete pouring for the expanding complex is expected to begin next month.
Approval of the site plan through the Lordtown Planning Commission requires the last permit. It locates buildings on the Site of Tod Avenue SW, and measures roads and parking lots, among others.
“We appreciate the continuity of the leaders of the Lordstown network,” GM spokesman Dan Flores said. “This approval is the next step in our commitment to invest more than $2 billion to build a world-class mobile battery production facility in Lordstown.”
“The assignment continues at full speed,” Flores said.
The plan-making commission gave its approval on Monday.
The plant is expected to begin production in early 2022. When operational, GM expects it to be a major thing in its long all-electric haul with cells made of packages that will force 11 of the thirteen cars GM plans for the next five. Years.
GM has already revealed cruise Origin, a stand-alone electric vehicle that will involve cells manufactured through Lordstown in San Francisco. In addition, production is still on track for two other electric cars supplied with the Ultium battery system, the Cadillac Lyriq and the GMC Hummer EV, yet to be discovered.
The cells will also be used in packages in two new cars that GM and Honda jointly propose for the Japanese automaker.
GM said its new Ultium batteries are unique in the industry because giant bag cells can be stacked vertically or horizontally inside the battery pack. This allows engineers to optimize battery design and distribution for vehicle design.
Construction is approximately 3.1 million feet and will charge approximately $2.25 billion. It sits on 158 acres of land adjacent to GM’s former automotive plant, which closed in March 2019.
Although GM has taken the lead in the licensing process, Ultium Cells LLC is a joint venture with South Korean corporate company LG. In the past I had the running call GigaPower LLC.
The plant will employ more than 1,000 people, he said.
