GM dealer chatbot talked into selling Chevy Tahoe for $1

In what can only be described as one of the most productive examples of why it’s incredibly vital for a company to read up on new technologies fully before jumping on the new trend, a Chevrolet dealership south of the border faces the consequences of implementing an AI. . chatbot-style without fully understanding its functions – and those of web scammers.

Social media channels, Facebook-owned Threads and a service no longer called Twitter, saw users last weekend post several examples of their conversations with the ChatGPT-powered chat service that California-based Watsonville dealership recently added to its website.

The dealership’s decision to use AI-based generation in this way isn’t a totally exclusive option, as many dealerships have some sort of virtual service that harasses other people buying a car online. However, the generation directing the scenes in this specific situation hasn’t put up enough barriers to prevent conversations with ChatGPT from taking weird (and potentially) costly turns.

Suddenly, a user gently controlled to force the chatbot to settle for selling a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe for the princely sum of a dollar. To dispute this offer, the value is fair, just ask the chat service to respond. somehow to all the long-term requests, adding asking them to sell a new SUV with the logo for the value of a penny.

By the way, readers should be aware that complex installations of this type (such as ChatGPT) may be asked to respond quickly, a useful feature for programmers looking to create a program and verify its code. In this case, it simply caused heartburn in an unfortunate major dealership.

Other hilarity – pulled off before the dealership’s IT department got wise and pulled the plug – included getting the chatbot (for a General Motors store, mind you) to recommend the customer consider a Ford F-150 as a solid choice in the truck segment. This is not typical behaviour of human sales staff working the floor of a Chevy dealership.

Elsewhere, other users were able to ask the service to write and demonstrate quintiles and rhymes that complement competing products like the Toyota Tundra. And, just in case, someone asked him about the meaning of life. Unfortunately, his answer was not “42. “

UPDATE: Chevrolet offered a statement to Driving.ca regarding this dealer’s use of the tech, which we have to admit also makes a good point: “The recent advancements in generative AI are creating incredible opportunities to rethink business processes at GM, our dealer networks and beyond,” it read. “We certainly appreciate how chatbots can offer answers that create interest when given a variety of prompts, but it’s also a good reminder of the importance of human intelligence and analysis with AI-generated content.” —Ed.
