General Motors will lay off about 1,300 people at two of its Michigan plants, according to WARN notices the company has filed with state regulators.
The job cuts at GM Orion Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly, which will take place in the new year, come after the automaker announced in October that it would delay production of electric pickup trucks until 2025.
The layoffs at GM’s Orion plant will affect 945 employees, while 369 employees will be cut from the Lansing assembly plant.
The Orion plant produced the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV crossovers, and GM plans to produce more electric vehicles, namely the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, at the plant. But the company announced in October that it would delay the start. sealing the fate of the staff while the plant remains idle.
GM said in October that the delay was not due to the recent United Auto Worker strike, which is the longest auto strike in the U. S. in 25 years.
CNN has reached out to the United Auto Workers union, which represents both plants, for comment.
“GM plans to provide employment opportunities to all affected team members, in accordance with the provisions of the UAW-GM National Settlement. Lansing Grand River Assembly will continue to produce the Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5,” the company said in an email to CNN. about the layoffs at Lansing.
UAW members who were laid off at the Orion plant will “be offered other opportunities in Michigan, including positions at Factory ZERO in Detroit-Hamtramck. Orion Assembly salaried employees will also be placed in other internal opportunities in accordance with GM policy,” GM said.
The layoffs at GM reflect the growing uncertainty facing the electric vehicle market. Discounts on electric cars have increased, according to Edmunds. com, because they remain unsold in dealerships longer than gas-powered cars. This indicates a decline in demand in what has been considered a booming market in recent years.
Other automakers have also cut costs. Ford announced in October that it would lay off 700 workers building the F-150 Lightning, the electric edition of its best-selling vehicle. The company said it will spread the layoffs over 3 shifts at its Rouge. electric vehicle center in Dearborn, Michigan.
