Former Aston Martin, Schumacher and Grosjean race engineer in F1 2025

Gary Gannon, former race engineer for Romain Grosjean, Mick Schumacher and Nico Hulkenberg at Haas, has the last big call to sign for Aston Martin ahead of the 2025 F1 season.

Gannon, who worked for the now-defunct Marussia team for 3 years between 2011 and 2014, has one of the most recognizable voices on team radio in recent years.

Gannon, who was closely linked with Grosjean between 2016 and 2020, spent two years racing with Schumacher in 2021/22 before joining Hulkenberg following the German’s return in early 2023.

Gannon left his position at Haas at the end of the 2024 F1 season and joined Aston Martin as senior race engineer ahead of F1 2025.

PlanetF1. com understands that the team does not yet know whether Gannon will work with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso or teammate Lance Stroll for the new season.

Chris Cronin served as Alonso’s race engineer in F1 2024, with Ben Michell and Andrew Vizard working on Stroll’s side of the garage.

Gannon is the latest high-profile call to join Aston Martin ahead of F1 2025, with former Ferrari technical director Enrico Cardile starting work as technical director earlier this month.

PlanetF1.com revealed last week that F1 design guru Adrian Newey will officially join the team on Monday March 3, less than two weeks before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, following his departure from Red Bull.

Newey stands as the most decorated individual in the history of F1, with more than 200 race wins and a combined 26 Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles to his name for Red Bull, McLaren and Williams.

The 66-year-old has been appointed to the newly created role of managing technical partner as well as a shareholder at Aston Martin, and is expected to lead the progression of the team’s new car for F1 2026.

Aston Martin aims to make significant progress on the new regulations planned for F1 2026 through a factory partnership with Honda, Red Bull’s existing engine supplier.

In the past, Gannon worked as a functional progression engineer for Honda for a decade between 1999 and 2009, participating in the CART and American Le Mans categories.

His arrival comes after Aston Martin announced a control restructuring for F1 2025, with Andy Cowell appointed team principal months after joining the team as the organisation’s chief executive.

Cowell is widely regarded as one of F1’s most impressive executives, having orchestrated the good fortune of the Mercedes High Performance Powertrains engine department with the hybrid V6 launched in 2014.

His predecessor Mike Krack remains at Aston Martin, having played the role of track director.
