Ford is recalling about 1. 9 million Explorer SUVs in the U. S. because a piece of trim could fly off and create a danger to other drivers.
The recall covers the 2011-2019 style year Explorers.
Documents released Wednesday through the U. S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NSCA) have been released by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security. U. S. customs and drug laws imply that the clips that hold the trim covering the roof bars near the windshield can come off.
If this happens, the molding can be thrown off and create a risk of accident.
The recall comes after U. S. regulators opened an investigation into the factor last January after receiving 164 customer complaints. Canadian regulators also have the problem.
The documents imply that, at first, Ford would not proceed with the recall, due to the low mass of the part, but the company went ahead with the recall after U. S. regulators decided the issue posed a safety risk.
Ford said Wednesday it expects only 5% of recalled Explorers to be affected by the problem. Encourage homeowners to contact dealers for an inspection when portions are available.
The company said in documents that it is aware of 568 customer court cases and more than 14,000 warranty reports alleging missing or loose parts. Ford said he is not aware of any injuries or injuries due to this issue.
Dealers will trim the parts to make sure the clips are hooked and add adhesive to hold them in place.
Owners will be notified starting March 13.
