Flagstaff man suspected of hit-and-run fatal assault arrested in store

A guy suspected of a fatal hit-and-run in Flagstaff arrested on Monday.

Flagstaff police responded to a call about a boy’s mendacity on North Fourth Street near East Greenlaw Lane around 8:30 a.m. last Friday. He suffered serious injuries and was given to him by emergency first aid by police until first responders arrived, according to Flagstaff Police Department spokesman the sergeant. Carlos Hernandez II.

The guy later known as Nelvin Thompson, 55, from Flagstaff.

Thompson was transferred to Flagstaff Medical Center with “serious life-threatening injuries” and pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, Hernandez said.

Investigators were called to the scene and we decided that a southbound vehicle on Fourth Street hit Thompson. They believe there was noticeable damage to the hood and windshield.

On Monday, Turner Kelly, 23, took his red Honda Civic to a car window repair shop. Employees called police when they saw hairs sticking out of damaged glass windshield and major damage, police said.

Kelly left the store after leaving the vehicle. Upon his return, investigators seized his vehicle as evidence and began asking him.

In his interview with police, Kelly told them he was running as a delivery force when he hit an unknown object. He said he stopped and saw nothing, so he went home.

Kelly was arrested and placed at the Coconino County Detention Center and faces imaginable fees for not staying on the scene of a collision that resulted in death or serious injury, Hernandez said.

“Researchers continue to gather more evidence about the vehicle, such as business CCTV footage in the area,” Hernandez said. “We would like to thank our business partners for their help in identifying the suspect in this case.”
