If it weren’t for the all-electric Folgore edition of the new Maserati. Before we get into all its numbers, yes, to reassure you, the gasoline and electric editions of the new Maser are built on the same platform. In fact, aside from the wheels and the fact that the Folgore doesn’t have an exhaust coming out of its rear fascia, the ICE and EV editions look virtually identical.
In fact, the battery-powered edition even sports Maserati’s classic open grille, though it’s largely dead to Folgore, as it’s designed for cooler fossil fuel combustion. Like Genesis’ incredible G80, some brands are ending the permanent truism that electric cars require their own proprietary platform.
But back to the numbers of the units. According to Maserati’s latest missive, the Folgore has 3 electric motors. Each, says the iconic Italian automaker, produces 300 kilowatts, which, with the proliferation of web conversion equipment these days, can be seamlessly verified to produce a tone of more than 402 hp. Rudimentary calculations seem to imply then that, if the 3 motors operated in full agreement in terms of kilowatt consumption, the Folgore would have 1,206 hp. In fact, 1,207 hp, if we take into account this “shadow above”.
The vital sentence in this last paragraph, however, would seem to be “if the 3 motors operated in general agreement in terms of kilowatt consumption. “That’s indeed what all car enthusiast sites trumpeted when the Folgore first announced. Google “1200-hp” and “Maserati” and see how many pages your browser flashes before you run out of SEO.
The only challenge with those claims is that Maserati says, in its own words, that the “maximum combined force to the wheels” of the motors is 560 kilowatts. That’s 751 horsepower, an intimidating and impressive number no doubt, yet the 1200 horsepower we have is talking.
So what’s going on?
Well, of course, all this may be a false impression caused by the mistranslation from hobthrough Italian into Anglo-Saxon cold-bloodedness. Maybe the GranTurismo Folgore can really produce 1200 ponies and “maximum force combined with the wheels” means something completely different. . On the other hand, it states that its 800-volt lithium-ion battery – 92. 5 kilowatt hours nominal; 83. 0 kWh usable: has a maximum discharge capacity of 610 kilowatts. That’s 818 horsepower, with greater certainty, than the 751 hp the Folgore is rated for, but still not the 1200 ponies that were about to delight anyone. stupid enough to hurt the pedal of Maser’s first electric vehicle.
Why the limits?
Well, on the one hand, Maserati surely decided us to concentrate on the final handling as much as the prodigious acceleration. In fact, it turns out that at least part of the reasoning for limitations is to maintain some of the strength of each. Motor in reserve for optimal torque vectoring. Maserati would like to point out that the two rear motors drive each of the wheels independently. Similarly, the third case of three hundred kW is fixed at the front.
So what do all those numbers mean?
Is Maserati worried that the 83. 0 kilowatt-hours of battery will drain too smoothly through too many bursts of 1200 horsepower?Perhaps, the continuous bursts of 751 hp, of which the Folgore is capable, are unlikely to be noticeably more frugal.
Could there be one of the 20-second “burst” modes you can have with more ponies?Again, perhaps, even that would seem to be limited through the battery, not electric motors. Could there be a launch feature that the company still doesn’t detail that it will access more torque, already indexed as 996 pound-feet, for an even smoother handling of the brakes that torments your stomach?Could Maserati prepare us for a long-term software update that would allow access to this entire reserve?power? Impossible to say, but we promise to let you know later.
In the meantime, though, here are a few more numbers to keep you captivated, until this mystery of the lack of horses is solved. The electrified Folgore replicates the top speed of 320 km/h of the more productive ICE-powered versions, then increased ante with a 2. 7-second Ferrari-SP3 bait scoot at one hundred kilometers per hour. No matter how tough the electrified GranTurismo is, that’s a lot.
As for the more pedestrian questions related to the new GranTurismo, it seems that the 2260-kilogram electric Folgore will weigh about 465 kilograms (1023 pounds) more than the ICE models, but its weight will be distributed thanks to a better 50-50 from front to rear split, in the 52-48 of the versions with Nettuno engine.
Thanks to its 800V battery architecture, Maserati claims its maximum charging capacity will be around 270 kilowatts, almost the same as that of the segment-leading Porsche Taycan. As for diversity, Maserati says we expect a diversity of 250 miles (400 km), however this is the maximum maximum likely measured through Europe’s positive WLTP program. Keep in mind our stricter criteria and the maximum of Folgore will probably have a maximum diversity of around 350 kilometers.
Maserati will also unveil pricing closer to next year’s GranTurismo launch, however, a well-informed guess would have a gasoline-based Modena sneaked just below the $200,000 CDN mark, while a fully optional Folgore will likely hit $300,000. This will buy hell from a GranTurismo, even if it is not as monstrous as expected.
