The FIA has to cancel all of its last historic motorsport championships for 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic continues in European countries.
The 2020 editions of the FIA European Historic Sports Rally Championship, the FIA Historical Formula One Championships and the FIA Sports Cars, as well as the FIA Historical European Formula 3 Cup, have been cancelled.
“The F3 Cup was to be a unique occasion, the historic Zandvoort GP (4-6 September), while the other 3 championships had a fixed schedule for the next 3 months.
The FIA statement said today: “The direct consequences of the COVID-19 scenario are affecting the historic racing community, as increasing restrictions save drivers, most of whom are amateurs, from abroad.
“This means that the external prestige of certain occasions becomes less applicable from a purely sporting point of view, while for the organizers, the situations of setting up old occasions that combine other national and foreign networks are more complex.
Furthermore, especially in rallies, the recent cancellation of the Rallye International du Valais has reduced the number of rounds remaining (three) to the minimum established in the Championship Sporting Regulations for awarding titles.
“Members of the Historical Motor Sports Commission (HMSC) and all related organizers will do so in 2021. “
Although the FIA championships have been cancelled, individual occasion championship qualifiers can still take place.
