Ferrari President John Elkann admits that his team probably won’t win in Formula One until a regulatory review in 2022.
Major technical regulations to close the box were scheduled to be introduced in 2021, but were delayed until 2022 due to a number of cost reduction measures implemented through F1 as a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Ferrari has had a depressing start in 2020 after taking over with its car design concept this season, and with a limited progression diversity for next year with groups forced to postpone their cars in 2021, the Italian team faces the likelihood of their competitive fights.coming through next year.
In a rare interview with the Italian Gazzetta dello Sport, Elkann asked for the patience of Scuderia fans, while expressing his “total confidence” in team manager Mattia Binotto.
“This year we are competitive due to car design errors,” Elkann said.
“We had a number of structural weaknesses that existed for some time in the aerodynamics and dynamics of the vehicle. We’ve lost engine power.
“The truth is that our car is competitive. You’ve noticed her on the track and you’ll see her again.
“We are laying the groundwork to be competitive and return to victory when regulations are replaced in 2022, I am convinced of that,” he added.
“Binotto has the features and skills to start a new winning cycle.”
“We have a long way to go. When Todt began this historic cycle [of five consecutive titles] in 2000, we came out of a rapid that lasted more than 20 years, beginning in 1979.
“It was a while, from his arrival in 1993 to the moment he returned Ferrari to victory. The question, then, is painting on and off the track, bringing team spirit and stability, building the Ferrari.step.”
Ferrari has lately placed fifth in the constructors’ championship after the first 3 races and controlled a result from the place of the moment, received through Charles Leclerc at a crazy Austrian Grand Prix opening season.
Elkann also spoke about Ferrari’s resolve to component tactics with quadruple world champion Sebastian Vettel and updated it with McLaren’s existing driving force, Carlos Sainz, for 2021.
“In the last 10 years we have had champions like (Fernando) Alonso and Vettel, who have been world champions,” Elkann said.
“But it is more difficult to rebuild a cycle and ask for patience from those who have already won compared to those who have the long way ahead.
“We lay the groundwork for building anything and it’s sustainable, and the contract we signed with Charles proves it: five years, never so much in Ferrari’s history.
“Leclerc and Sainz will move to Maranello, they will be our engineers. With them the new device will be born.”
