Explosion of fire targets French synagogue in planned attack

A policeman was injured Saturday by a car explosion in the parking lot of a synagogue in La Grande-Motte, southern France. Authorities called the incident a planned attack and a plan to increase security at Jewish institutions.

The Government is in favor of a suspect and the anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office has resumed the investigation, as indicated by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal. “This is an anti-Semitic attack. Once again, our Jewish compatriots are in the crosshairs,” Attal said in X. “We will never be intimidated by such violence. “

The attack follows a rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Europe, attributed to the recent clash between Hamas and Israel. Local media reported that two cars, one of which contained a fuel cylinder, were set on fire in the synagogue’s parking lot. CRIF leader Yonathan Arfi condemned the attack as an attempt to kill Jews. The injured policeman’s life is not in danger, according to police. No additional details have been released, but Attal and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin are expected to make a stopover at the site. Darmanin is confident that police coverage of the country’s Jewish synagogues, schools and department stores will be strengthened.
