Eurostar blames Covid-19 for the seat only with Wi-Fi

Responding to a tweet from a visitor wondering about the change.

A spokesman told the BBC that the move had been made and that Wi-Fi on trains had now been restored.

I didn’t know how Covid-19 had affected the provision of a Wi-Fi connection from a network by the track to popular seats.

Mark Jackson, founder of Internet service provider site ISPreview, said the resolution of restricting it to premium seats in the wake of the pandemic “is as logical as dancing naked on lava.”

Wi-Fi is provided through a terrestrial network of cellular broadband cells and it was unclear how additional security measures brought as a result of the coronavirus would be distributed in popular seats, he added.

Eurostar said in a statement: “After an unprecedented drop in industry demand, we have made some transitority adjustments to simplify our business. This includes onboard Wi-Fi connectivity.

“We are pleased to say that Wi-Fi is now available on board and that it is loose in all kinds of service.”
