The Victorian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced that it is cracking down on the illegal dumping of used tyres across the state.
The authority has stepped up its efforts to teach the trucking industry and the public about their day-to-day work to prevent the dumping of waste tires, while also using complex intelligence (AI) to prevent operators from illegally dumping old tires.
Currently, the Environmental Protection Act of 2017 classifies used tyres as a priority to be declared, as they pose a serious threat to human health and the environment.
“They can catch fire and produce toxic smoke that harms people’s health and the environment for a long time,” says EPA Victoria.
“They can also harbor pests and diseases, such as mosquitoes and rodents, which can affect homes and communities. “
The EPA says its Waste Tracker can track the movement of reportable priority waste, such as used tires, from the point of origin to the point of disposal, and has helped it and the waste industry prevent used tires from being dumped illegally.
He recommends that garages use the tracker every time carriers dispose of used tires to hold them accountable.
The EPA Victoria says the public also asks questions of stores and carriers or obtains evidence that used tires have been moved legally.
EPA Victoria says haulers will also be required to take used tires to an approved disposal site while its Waste Tracker records the main points of used tire movements.
“EPA uses artificial intelligence and tracking equipment to monitor and prevent carriers from selling illegally used tires,” says EPA Victoria.
“There is no excuse for this behavior. “
