Elon Musk departed Shanghai on Thursday and wrapped up a whirlwind tour of China in which the billionaire met with top officials, praised the country’s technological progress and visited Tesla’s Gigafactory.

China is one of Tesla’s top sales and production markets, and Musk over the years has praised the world’s second-largest economy.

Musk’s trip to China, his first in 3 years, comes as the country seeks to paint a friendly environment for foreign corporations amid geopolitical tensions with the U. S. After years of strict Covid controls that have made the operating environment challenging.

This is what Musk did after arriving in Beijing on Tuesday.

Musk met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Tuesday.

Qin spoke about the outlook for China’s electric vehicle market, which he said “has broad prospects for progression,” according to a statement from the Chinese ministry.

Musk praised the other Chinese and China’s achievements. Tesla opposes “decoupling” and wants to continue expanding its business in China, according to the statement.

On Wednesday, Musk met with Jin Zhuanglong, China’s minister of industry and technology. The two sides discussed “the progression of new electric cars and networked smart cars,” according to a ministry statement.

On Thursday, Musk met with Chen Jining, the party secretary in Shanghai. Tesla’s Gigafactory is in Shanghai, its only production facility in China and one of the world’s largest for the electric car maker.

Chen spoke of Shanghai as a position for foreign affairs, according to an official. ArrayMusk praised the good fortune of the Shanghai Gigafactory and said he hopes to continue expanding cooperation with the city in various areas, he added.

Musk also met with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, one of the country’s most sensible officials, Reuters reported, citing a source familiar with the matter. Ding is known as loyal to Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Ding is a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, a leading governing framework headed by Xi.

It’s unclear what was discussed, but the assembly highlights Musk’s close relations with sensible Chinese politicians.

Musk also met with Zeng Yuqun, a former member of CATL, the world’s largest battery company for electric vehicles and a supplier to Tesla, according to local media. aspect by aspect in a hotel.

In March, Bloomberg reported that Tesla was making plans to build a battery factory in the U. S. U. S. in partnership with CATL.

CATL declined to comment, and it’s not transparent what Musk and Zeng had discussed.

Musk visited Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai on Thursday, to watch a video posted through the company’s official Twitter account, Weibo.

The billionaire gave them a speech and congratulated them.

“It’s incredibly impressive how you’ve triumphed over so many difficulties and so many challenges,” Musk told staff. “I tell other people around the world that the cars we produce here are not only the maximum effective output, the highest quality. “

The Shanghai plant has been key to the electric carmaker’s entry into China.
