Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who breathed his last at Banda’s Rani Durgavati Medical School, had a penchant for luxury cars and guns.
The five-time MP reportedly owned a collection of high-end cars whose license plate numbers ended in “786,” a respected series in Islam that stands for “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim,” “At the call of God, the merciful and compassionate” in Arabic.
Affectionately nicknamed ‘Lambu’ by his fellow academics, Ansari excelled at cricket and hunting. During his school years, he drove a Bullet motorcycle and a jeep. By the end of the 1980s, after entering the criminal underworld, Ansari already owned a variety of luxury vehicles, adding prestige models such as Maruti Gypsy, Tata Safari, Ford Endeavour, Pajero Sport, Audi and BMW.

In 1986, following his release from prison for the murder of businessman Sachchidanand Rai, Ansari allegedly greeted the criminal in the open air, through his affiliates, with a caravan of luxury vehicles, each adorned with license plates ending in “786. “Ansari owned six Tata Safaris and a white Gypsy convertible, all with the “786” finish on their license plates.
According to media reports, while Mukhtar was in prison, he expressed a preference for making the foreign Hummer SUV logo the pride of his convoy. He used to talk to prisoners about their cars and say that as soon as he was taken out of prison, he would do it. He bought the Hummer SUV and kept it at the front of his convoy, but before he knew that dream, he left the world.
Mukhtar does not, but also his wife Afsa and their two sons, Abbas and Umar, own many high-end luxury vehicles. Reportedly, Afsa owned cars such as Audi, Mercedes, and BMW, while his sons owned a Toyota Fortuner, a Ford Endeavour, and a BMW among their possessions.

While law enforcement defended the family and Ansari was jailed in 2005, most of those vehicles were allegedly seized by investigative agencies when they were found to be Benami.
In 2021, UP police confiscated Mukhtar Ansari’s wife’s Audi car under the Gangster Act. The car belonged to Ansari’s wife.
