RUNNEMEDE – A piece of forest in an advertising strip here is the proposal of a dollar store.
Dollar General obtained the borough’s approval to build 10,640 square feet in the 900 block of East Clements Bridge Road.
The store would rise on a thickly wooded, 1.5-acre site next to the headquarters of Mr. Softee, a building that draws attention with a faux ice-cream truck on its roof.
Dollar General currently operates a smaller store in a strip shopping center on the opposite side of the proposed development site.
The existing company “will move to the new largest store, which will also sell derivatives,” according to data archived in the municipality’s development plans and zoning council.

The municipal board has granted a use variance for a retail store at the site, which is near the borough’s border with Barrington.
It also approved the initial and final plan, as well as other elements of the project, at the May and June meetings.
Tennessee-based Dollar General, founded in 1939, has approximately 16,500 retail stores throughout the county.
On a Monday, a corporate representative stopped before committing to the Runnemede site.
“Right now, we’re finishing our due diligence,” spokeswoman Angela Petkovik said.
She said the store had received the mandatory approvals “to make sure we can move forward with a task if we do it at the end of this process.”
